Artist Statement:

My sculptures are expressions of my love of and identification with the stone. In my work, I explore the nature of the stone and strive to achieve an aesthetic balance between the stone's nature and my carved form, a bold oneness. The non-representational expressive form lends itself best to this idea.

Professional Reviews:

  • William Zimmer, Art Critic, The New York Times:

"As Ulla Novina sees it, a sculptor can take one of two paths. One is concerned with creating beauty; the other, the one taken by Novina, is both more ancient and more urgent. Its overriding subject is life itself and its eternal processes. She sees as early antecedents manifestations such as imprints of hands on rocks faces made by Paleolithic peoples and slabs of rock that contain Viking runes - things that declare, 'I am here'."
  • Joseph Jacobs, Curator of American Art, The Newark Museum:

"It is an endless analysis and visual delight to move through the piece and see how the different textures work with and against the basic form. The work has a nice elemental feeling."
  • André Emmerich, Emmerich Gallery (now Ameringer & Yohe Fine Art) New York, N.Y.:

"I see a kinship with Noguchi and his sense of textures and the inherent values of the stone. These aesthetics are interpreted in a highly personal and beautiful fashion."

Artistic Background:

I was born and educated in Sweden. Art has always been a part of my life.

I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to study in the studio of Minoru Niizuma. My work as a stone carver, as well as my sense of aesthetics, developed in his studio.

In addition to studying and creating, I have lectured on art and sculpture. I am the president of a group of sculptors at The Art Center of Northern New Jersey. I have served on the board of The Art Center for several years, and am now helping Bergen County create a County Art Council.

Collections:

I am represented by the Broadfoot and Broadfoot Gallery of Fine Art in Boonton, N.J. My sculptures can be seen at the Bergen Museum of Art and Science in Paramus, N.J., as well as in corporate and private collections in the United States and Sweden.

My resume is available on request.
