Artist Statement:

I am exploring the nature of paper and it’s three dimensional opportunities. I use recycled paper to create the pulp that I form into shapes that reflect the natural world; seed pods, nests, eggs...shapes that resonate with birth, rebirth and growth. I do this, partially, to recover the sensual feel and spontaneity of working with clay, as I had done earlier in life, but mostly I do this work to bring about a physical realization of my inner feelings. The resulting transitory nature of my work is part of its impetus.

My dedication to my art form entails multi levels. On one level, I am concerned with the environment and look forward to using recycled papers for my forms. On another level the actual material use is overridden with a desire to build forms from the inside out; I am intrigued with hollow forms, forms that can or may hold something unknown to the casual viewer of the exterior.

I also am intrigued with combining materials, adding layers of wood filler, sanding and filing to create texture. At times I like using the malleability and permanence of metals in combination with the paper pulp. Many pieces have included words, poems and fables, as I am taken with the strength words can convey, especially in combination with a physical object.
