Amanda Dumas–Hernandez is full-time faculty at Savannah College of Art and Design

Constructs such as irony, contradiction and conundrum are always constants in my creative process, although my media and methods may vary from piece to piece. I work very intuitively, and my ideas form cumulatively—sometimes like rhythmic literary word play.

Miles Davis once said, “When I trip on a crack in the sidewalk I make music out of it.” I borrow this mantra for the intuitive, improvisational way that I think and create. I love absurdity and making beautiful or intriguing objects out of the commonplace or banal. Intrinsic meanings, materials, processes and absurd juxtapositions and preconceptions resonate in my practice.

“Blessings and Curses,” the theme of my current body of work, consists of sculpture and installation vignettes along with mixed media painting/drawing that explore the dichotomy between blessings and curses.  My intention is to turn conventional “intellectual thinking” on its ear, while metaphorically depicting the strata of time, situation and disaster—gilding it all with
silver glitter and other materials packed with sparkly allegory.
