BIOGRAPHY

Born in Chicago Ill, and presently living in Evanston, Carol Hammerman has continually pursued an active career in the visual arts.   She obtained a BFA from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio and a MFA from the School of The Art Institute of Chicago.    Teaching has always been a part of Hammerman’s creative development.   She has taught both sculpture and design at Lake Forest College, The Art Institutes, Evanston Art Center, and currently is an adjunct professor at Columbia College of Chicago.   She was the recipient of an Illinois Arts Council Grant and an artist-in-residence for the Chicago Council on Fine Arts.  In 2009, Hammerman and a Columbia College colleague created a public art waking tour company, SculpTours: an inside look at outdoor sculpture.    

One-person exhibitions include the Chicago Cultural Center, Dobrick Gallery, Joliet Junior College, and Artemesia Gallery.  Numerous group exhibitions include the Evanston Art Center, Columbia College, Lake Forest College, Bradley University, CSI  Biennales, Woman Made Gallery, and Wood Street Gallery.

ARTIST STATEMENT

In small-scale sculpture, there is an intimacy which offers an invitation for one to enter - - - engaging in the defined space.   Within this given format, I present the female figure.  Despite a lack of realism, the figurative elements suggest a certain energy and gesture.

Yes, the communication is ambiguous.   Consider my current series of ‘Trophies for Women’.  Typically a  trophy celetrates one’s success in an event.  But as a sculpture, I am able to rethink the female gesture within my personal concerns.  The notion that a figurative shell can communicate more than the whole is intriguing.   I am also interested in materials, combining elements such as wood and metal in unique ways. They are chosen for their inherent warmth, aesthetic and structural capabilities.
