Wingfern

Illuminated artwork and landscape coordination for South 188th Street Tunnel, SeaTac, WA. Wayfinding backlit ‘wingferns’ (150 watts per tunnel entry) provide eyebrow friezes over tunnel egress at SeaTac International Airport. As a Pacific Northwest icon, it pays luminous homage to the aeronautic understory, the primary metaphor for the coastal woodland theme defining this sector of the Airport Landscape Plan. Shape and curvature of fern approximates velocity and trajectory of aircraft at takeoff and landing. Wing cradling fern highlights efforts made by the airport towards nearby wetlands water quality improvement project.
