“Bountiful Bench” is a life-sized model of functional art. Visitors can sit on the “lap” of the piece and hopefully feel the embrace of the themes I have tried to represent: nature, country, environmental consciousness, and a return to one’s roots.
The strength and character of the American spirit was my original inspiration for “Bountiful Bench.” Furthermore, my vision was to represent the natural artistry Mother Nature, the greatest artist of all, has laid before us. Wearing a blanket of fiber, a woman of nature and history sits with outstretched hands, anchoring the piece. The coverlet wraps around her body and acts as a sanctuary for the earth’s many gifts.
Assets of the earth are nestled in its folds: corn and vegetables, wildflowers and trees, wheat and soil, fruit and seeds, livestock and fish. Portraying all of the essentials of life. In her chest she holds the sun, the moon and the stars representing the ebb and flow of the climate, the circle of life, the heart of all growth and nourishment. Strong waters of change pour down through her hair. A baby eagle nests at the base of the piece, symbolizing hope and renewal. In contrast, mighty feathers gracefully canopy the summit of the bountiful blanket, representing enduring strength.
In 2008, the 1st edition was installed outside a community library in rural Illinois.
