Blue Grosbeak
2013
18” width x 44.25” height x 1.5” depth
Paint, Walnut, 3-D Wall Art, Oil

The great find in this slab of walnut yielded a beak-like opening to one side of the unit. With that, I searched for a bird species that had ‘beak’ in it’s name. The Blue Grosbeak has great lines with a more defined “shape” to the color on it’s wings, which is reflected by the open knot on the tree, and where I tried to humbly represent the form on the gessobord. Interestingly the German word for big is ‘gros’ and the open knot is certainly a prominent feature of the walnut slab. oil on gessobord (6”h x 18”w x 0.125”d), mounted to a walnut slab
