Found tire fragments and plated steel. This image came to me all of a sudden, as I was enjoying the pliability and plasticity of the tire rubber. I discovered that when squeezed tightly, this seemingly tough and sinewy material becomes quite vulnerable, weak and tears easily. As I was working on this piece, I found myself resonating with the imagery of being tightly squeezed by the transportation-dependent culture we live in, where all of our survival needs are brought to us by consuming finite fossil resources. Even when we see this pattern and don't like what we see, we're all tied together in this system that seems both vulnerable and difficult to live without. After completing the piece, it dawned on me that it could be a "cultural self-portrait." I guess in some ways I could say that about all these works.
