BACKGROUND

The ISC established the Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award program in 1994 to recognize deserving sculpture students and to encourage their continued commitment to the field of sculpture.

The Student Awards program is organized by the ISC and is sponsored in part by Gertrud and Heinz Aeschlimann, Doris and Donald Fisher, the Johnson Art and Education Foundation, the Jon and Mary Shirley Foundation, and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.


ELIGIBILITY

Only educational institutions with current ISC University Level Memberships are eligible to submit student nominations Each school can nominate up to three (3) students university wide, in both graduate and undergraduate programs.

If your school needs to join the ISC or renew an ISC University Level Membership, please fill out the University Membership Form and return by mail with payment or join/renew online. There are no additional fees to participate in the Student Awards program.

Nominees must be students currently enrolled and working towards a BA, BFA, MFA or certificate from an established and reputable art school at the time of nomination. The ISC reserves the right to decline entries from schools deemed inappropriate for this program, or from students who are no longer enrolled.


AWARD BENEFITS

Student Award Recipients Receive the Following:

  • Photograph(s) of the artistís award-wining work and accompanying artist statement published in Sculpture magazine and on the ISCís website. Online and print recognition will also include the names of the faculty sponsor and the nominating institution.
  • A chance to win a Residency in Switzerland to study with world-renowned sculptor Heinz Aeschlimann.
  • A one-year ISC membership, including subscriptions to both Sculpture magazine and the digital and app version, plus opportunities, featuring job listings, calls for artists, member accomplishments and more!
  • Insurance coverage for art work during the group exhibition. Shipping coverage will be determined on an individual basis.
  • A listing in Portfolio, the ISC's online registry of sculptors at www.sculpture.org.
  • An opportunity to participate in the traveling Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Awards exhibition, hosted by an esteemed arts organization in a location TBD. (Details to follow)
  • Discounts on ISC sponsored conferences, art periodicals, supplies and services.
  • An award certificate and recognition letter from the ISC, signed by the Executive Director and Chair of the ISC Board of Trustees.
  • A Chance to win a residency at Mana Contemporary in Jersey City.

  • Educational Institutions of Awardees Will Receive the Following:

  • Recognition in Sculpture magazine in conjunction with the student awardeesí art work and artist statement.
  • Invitation to spotlight the institutionís program(s) on the ISCís website.


  • APPLICATION PROCEDURE

    Information for Faculty Sponsors:

    Faculty Sponsors can submit up to three (3) nominees per school, and must fill out an ONLINE STUDENT NOMINATION FORM by March 29, 2017. Students must be currently enrolled.

    Students cannot apply for award. They must first be nominated by faculty/school.

    Information for Student Nominees:

    Following the nomination, each student must fill out an ONLINE STUDENT SUBMISSION FORM including their School/University's ISC membership number and the following required documentation:
    - Up to three (3) high resolution images and/or videos (see rules below) of the submitted artwork
    - A current resume (not to exceed 400 words)
    - An artist statement (not to exceed 400 words)
    Each student nominated must submit all required documentation via the online submission form by April 12, 2017.



    SUBMISSION RULES

    Students can submit 1 - 3 pieces as long as the (3) image limit is not exceeded.

    HIGH RESOLUTION IMAGES REQUIRED

  • High Resolution (at least 300dpi) images of your work are required.
  • Single image only - no multiple images/composite.
  • No people in photographs.

  • VIDEO SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

    Video clips are allowed for kinetic sculptures, performance documentation and 4-D (sound and time based media) submissions only.

  • All video files must be submitted in WMV (.WMV) format:
    There are many free, online file conversion services that can transfer files to wmv format (E.G. - http://www.online-convert.com).
  • Limit all video lengths to 30 seconds each.
  • All video files must be named in the following format:
    Last name, First Initial of student artist_Title of work
    (E.G. -Smith,J_TitleofWork)
  • Any video submissions that are incomplete or do not adhere to the guidelines may be excluded from jury review.
  • Video clips will count as one (1) of your three (3) allowed images.

  • ALL SELECTED ARTWORK MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR EXHIBITION AND ABLE TO TRAVEL

  • Each sculpture submitted must be available for exhibition and for the duration of the traveling exhibition, through 2018.
  • Each piece chosen MUST be properly crated/packaged for cross country travel.
  • In the event that an award recipientís work is unable to be accommodated by the venue for the traveling exhibit, the ISC reserves the right to exclude said work from the traveling exhibit. All reasonable attempts will be made to accommodate the specific award-winning artwork and/or to work with the artist to identify an alternative artwork for inclusion in the traveling exhibition.

  • OTHER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

  • Works submitted by nominated students must be completed, not in developmental stages.
  • Artwork must be able to endure a year long exhibition with no maintenance requirements..
  • There will be no substitution of artwork for any Student Award program exhibitions unless requested.
  • The specific artwork(s) selected by the jury must be available for exhibition.
  • All selected artwork must be properly packaged/crated for travel by artist.
