Talley Fisher is known internationally as an artist and sculptor who specializes in creating large-scale suspended sculptures for healthcare facilities, airports, hotels, companies, and private residences. Fisher is deeply involved with every aspect of her work from conceptualization through installation. Each of Talley’s sculptures is a simultaneous reflection of her wild admiration for nature and innate appreciation for materials and machines, the literal nuts and bolts that allow her to bend the rules of physics and push the limits of imagination in every piece she creates. A walk under or alongside a Fisher sculpture promises to grant the viewer a hiatus from all that’s heavy and a refreshed perspective on all that is possible.

She holds a Master of Landscape Architecture from the University of Oregon and a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from the State University of New York at Oswego. Years spent in Oregon and Idaho working for AmeriCorps, the Bureau of Land Management, and Oregon Fish and Wildlife solidified her interest in nature and the beauty and art found in natural forms. A six-month study abroad program in Spain and extensive travel in Asia and Europe have also deeply informed her work, from geometric patterns seen at the Alhambra to the architecture of Japan and China.

Upon her father’s unexpected death in 2006, she took over the studio to finish several of his uncompleted projects, and has now created over fifty sculptures of her own. She is skilled in creating computer models and 3-D imagery, working with architectural plans, and understanding the engineering of suspended sculptures. She finds collaboration essential to the process of creating an artwork, and works closely with the client, as well as the architects, engineers, contractors, and installers on every project.

Her elegant and positive sculptures abstractly reference nature inspired themes such as stars, leaves, petals, or waves; or more industrial or architectural themes. Although these sculptures are powerful objects visually, they are quite transparent and lightweight. Fascinating moiré patterns are seen when the perforated elements overlap, giving the illusion of movement. Her commissions in the United States, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Nassau and Guam, have enabled her to continue with her interest in travelling. Recently installed is a monumental suspended sculpture for a station in Hong Kong’s Mass Transit Railway (MTR).

Talley’s studio are located in an historic industrial building in Bellefonte and a barn and one-room schoolhouse along the Susquehanna River, where, since the 1970’s, Talley spent summers immersed in nature and art. She, her husband, and daughter continue to find inspiration and renewal at this special place. She is currently a Senior Research Artist for the Sci-Art Group at the Huck Institutes for Life Sciences at the Pennsylvania State University.
