In 2017, AWA launched 25 in 25, a bold initiative to secure 25 museum exhibitions for our women artist members, over the next 25 years. We did this because work by women artists makes up only 3 – 5% of the permanent holdings of art museums in America. We are determined to roll up our sleeves and do something about this! We now have museum shows booked through 2024. With an AWA membership, artists have the opportunity to jury into museums exhibitions every year for the next 25 years! Along with these exhibitions we are working to facilitate a Purchase Award for the museum’s permanent collection or for a corporate collection. Our Patron and our Gallery Members are supporting AWA in the mission of creating opportunities like this for women in the visual fine arts.

Kimberly Miller is the Founder of FemArt Gallery, Inc. and currently the President of the Advisory Committee.
As she was approaching her graduation with her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of North Florida in 2017 she had read an article written by Guerilla Girls, an anonymous group of feminists, female artists devoted to fighting sexism and racism within the art world.
Realizing that there is a bias towards women in Fine Arts she invited 20 colleagues to join her in an effort to correct and repair the social bias towards women artists. Three women answered her call and two of them, Karen Alber and Stephanie Andrews, joined her in creating a non-profit organization that would support women artists through exhibition opportunities, educational programs and bringing awareness of the myriad cultural contributions by women artists through community outreach.

The Guerrilla Girls

The Guerrilla Girls are anonymous artist activists who use disruptive headlines, outrageous visuals and killer statistics to expose gender and ethnic bias and corruption in art, film, politics and pop culture. They believe in an intersectional feminism that fights for human rights for all people.They undermine the idea of a mainstream narrative by revealing the understory, the subtext, the overlooked, and the downright unfair. They have done hundreds of projects (street posters, banners, actions, books, and videos) all over the world. They also do interventions and exhibitions at art museums, blasting them on their own walls for their bad behavior and discriminatory practices, including a stealth projection on the façade of the Whitney Museum about income inequality and the super rich hijacking art. Their retrospectives and traveling exhibitions have attracted thousands. Their new book, Guerrilla Girls: The Art of Behaving Badly collects hundreds of our projects from 1985 to 2020, and was named one of the best art books of 2020 by The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times. Recently our work was at Tate Modern and Whitechapel Gallery, London; São Paulo Museum of Art; the Venice Biennale; Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam; Museum of Military History, Dresden; Art Basel Hong Kong; and many other places. Their motto: Do one thing. If it works, do another. If it doesn’t, do another anyway. Keep chipping away!

Since their founding in 1974, Women’s Studio Workshop has been a professional artist studio dedicated to the creation of community, opportunity, empowerment, and development for women artists in all stages of their careers. Becoming Visible Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon

Did you know that less than 20% of biographies in English-language Wikipedia are about women? Help change that by joining the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum on March 27th for a Wikipedia edit-a-thon. Attendees will edit and create Wikipedia articles inspired by the museum’s first digital exhibition, “Becoming Visible.”

This event will have two parts:
1) Getting started with Wikipedia edits: 11am-12pm
2) Wikipedia edit-a-thon: 12pm-2pm

Attendees can join us for one of both parts depending on their availability and experience with Wikipedia editing. New editors are encouraged to attend the introductory session at 11am.

Nationally renowned Jerome Meadows artist asks ‘Are you creating art that’s creating impact where it is needed?’

As a boy in the Bronx, Jerome Meadows dreamed of Michelangelo.

He’d spend his spare waking hours drawing or painting horses in the style of the master artist — hyper-realistic with highly articulated musculature — only to talk with and create with the sculptor and painter after he’d gone to sleep. Some nights, the two would discuss Meadows’ favorite Michelangelo works, a series of statues known as “The Prisoners” or “The Slaves” because the forms are only partly carved free of the stones. Celebrating Juneteenth: The Power of Portraits

On June 19, 1865, a full two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation mandated the abolition of slavery in the Confederacy and two months after the end of the Civil War, word reached enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, that they were free.

From the 19th-century portraits in oil by free artist of color Julien Hudson to the photographic carte-de-visites of abolitionists Sojourner Truth and Frederick Douglass, portraiture had long served African American artists and sitters as a tool for countering stereotypes, for asserting individual and collective identity, and for challenging narrow conceptions of Black experience. This tradition continued through the 20th century and into the 21st.

This Juneteenth, Harvard students and staff present a selection of images by and of Black individuals from the Harvard Art Museums collections. These 20th- and 21st-century works explore the complexities of identity, agency, and self-fashioning, celebrating the diversity of the American experience.

QFX East is a multi-fandom LGBTQ convention that will be hosted from May 13-15 in Tampa, Florida. The con will feature many events and panels, with actors from various media, such as Meagan Tandy of Batwoman, or Arryn Zech of RWBY and Steven Universe. The event will be held both virtually and in-person.

QFX Events, the convention's promoter, was born out of the need for more accessible and queer-friendly events among the convention scene – especially in the South. With Florida's 'Don't Say Gay' bill recently signed, it is now more important than ever to build safe and welcoming spaces where LGBTQ+ voices can be amplified instead of silenced.

Ariana DeBose's Oscar Win is a Major Victory for the LGBTQ Community

Ariana DeBose is now the first openly queer Afro-Latina to win an Oscar, for her role as Anita in West Side Story. This is an enormous moment for the LGBTQ community, as rarely do queer actors win Oscar nominations. At a moment where legislations are attacking LGBTQ groups, this is a historical turn of events, one that has been overshadowed by the altercation between Chris Rock and Will Smith.

"Now you see why, that Anita says, 'I want to be in America,' because even in this weary world that we live in, dreams do come true," DeBose said in her acceptance speech. "And that's really a heartening thing right now."

Trans Art Market at Love City Brewery in Philadelphia

Trans Art Mart, a pop-up market highlighting transgender, non-binary and gender expansive artists, is being held at Love City Brewing in Callowhill next month after two years of postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Trans Art Mart was founded by Maine-based queer artist Mel Andrel in 2020, though it is now operated by Philadelphia creatives Meg Potoma and Gabriella Grimes.

The event will be held on Saturday, April 2 in the lot outside of the brewery at 1023 Hamilton St. from 12-7 p.m. The pop-up will follow Transgender Day of Visibility, which is commemorated annually on March 31.

Open-Air Dissident Memorial Faces Backlash

The Open-Air Dissident Memorial is a mural in Santiago, Chile that appeared earlier this month. The mural is 130 feet long, and was painted to honor the 10th anniversary of the brutal murder of Daniel Zamudio, who was killed by Neo-Nazis for being gay. The mural is intended to raise awareness of the issues faced by LGBTQ+ groups in Chile, but it is now facing controversy in regards to some parts of it being incredibly sexually explicit. The outcry has been mostly toward the mural being painted without approval, and as such younger children have been or could be exposed to graphic imagery.

ARTNews - Whitney Biennial 2022 Standouts

The 2022 Whitney Biennial will share many things in common with the 1993 exhibit, namely its focus on the issues of race, gender, and sexuality. Now, the biennial has the past two years of the pandemic to discuss, with its many messages of outcry of injustice, such as the protests that followed George Floyd's murder. This year, the exhibit will look to the past in order to see how these events will impact our future.

“Although underlying conditions are not new,” the curators write, “their overlap, their intensity, and their sheer ubiquity created a context in which past, present, and future folded into one another. We organized this Biennial to reflect these precarious and improvised times.”

The biennial will feature many artworks that address subjects like the Black Lives Matter movement and issues such as racial injustice against Black, Latinx, and Indigenous peoples.

March 31 is the International Transgender Day of Visibility.

Trans Day of Visibility is an annual awareness day celebrated around the world. The day is dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments of transgender and gender nonconforming people while raising awareness of the work that still needs to be done to achieve trans justice.

'The Ones Who Don't Say They Love You' by Maurice Carlos Ruffin

The Ones Who Don't Say They Love You is a book by author Maurice Carlos Ruffin. Ruffin has received much acclaim for his work, and is the winner of several literary prizes, including the Iowa Review Award in fiction and the William Faulkner–William Wisdom Creative Writing Competition Award for Novel-in-Progress. His work has been featured in the New York Times, and The Ones Who Don't Say They Love You is a New York Times Editor's Choice.

Ruffian has used fiction to raise racial awareness in America. The Ones Who Don't Say They Love You is a collection of short stories about New Orleans, where Ruffin grew up. He wants to highlight the city's culture through his work.

Asian American Film Festival at ODU

From March 13-15, Old Dominion University(ODU) in Norfolk, Virginia will be hosting their Asian American Film Festival. The festival will feature screenings of both short and feature films from Chinese American, Filipino American, Indian American, Korean American and Taiwanese American filmmakers.

The festival will also feature a keynote presentation by Dr. David Oh, Associate Professor of Communication Arts at Ramapo College of New Jersey. Oh will be presenting his new book, Whitewashing the Movies: Asian Erasure and White Subjectivity in U.S. Film Culture.

National Museum of African American History and Culture to Install Catlett Sculptures

The Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture(NMAAHC) is to install three sculptures by artist Elizabeth Catlett. Catlett is acclaimed for her work tackling race and feminism, rooted in her own life experiences. The three sculptures are meant to symbolize the dignity, struggle, and uplifting of African Americans and will be installed as part of the NMAAHC's exhibition on Women's History Month.
