Hiltner has exhibited both nationally and internationally, and views herself as an archeologist of science fiction, exploring its terrain and then intertwining those concepts with current scientific inquiry. Hiltner’s work is pollinated with visits to laboratories that reach forward into the future for answers to questions that plague the present. This odd temporality creates works with a fluid sense of time, highlighting how knowledge of the structure and dynamics of complex ecological networks are constantly evolving. By maintaining a sense of wonder, humor, and the absurd, each piece presents a vignette – a laboratory of the mind. It is tenuously balanced between reality and artifice, formed with science and science fiction’s materials, tools, and techniques. Through her work, Hiltner invites audiences into imaginary worlds to discover their own forms of comfort.

The International Sculpture Center (ISC) is a member-supported, nonprofit organization founded in 1960 to champion the creation and understanding of sculpture and its unique, vital contribution to society. Members include sculptors, collectors, patrons, architects, developers, journalists, curators, historians, critics, educators, foundries, galleries, and museums-anyone with an interest in and commitment to the field of sculpture. The recipient of this award demonstrates a commitment to their community and affects social change through their work.

Jurors Marcus Brown, sculptor and educator, New Orleans, LA; David Oresick, Executive Director of Mattress Factory, Pittsburgh, PA; and Joshua Reiman, sculptor, educator and writer, Portland, ME, selected Joachim from a pool of 72 applicants from 9 different countries. Joachim will be the subject of a feature article in the International Sculpture Center’s award-winning publication Sculpture magazine, as well as featured on the ISC website.

Ogwado Joachim’s work is centered strongly on sculpture and installation. His artistic approach seamlessly blends imagination and reality, resulting in captivating visual imagery that documents both the present and the memories of the past. Using ordinary and widespread materials, Joachim aims to foster a deeper understanding of his community's history and culture. The medium that predominantly captivates Joachim is plastic, chosen for its unique properties of transparency, reflectivity, and widespread availability. Embracing a collaborative approach with the public, Joachim actively involves his community in his art, encouraging engagement and dialogue. Drawing inspiration from indigenous knowledge archives, Joachim adopts techniques from his cultural heritage. These practices help him connect with his roots and better comprehend the vanishing aspects of his own cultural identity. Through his art, Joachim endeavors to invite his audience on a journey to explore their past and envision their future dreams.

The unanimous vote for the selection of Shirley Tse as the award recipient from this year’s pool of applicants is a testament to the dedication and excellence demonstrated by this educator. Shirley will be the subject of a feature article in the January/February 2024 issue of International Sculpture Center’s award winning publication Sculpture magazine, as well as featured on the ISC website.

Tse received a Master of Fine Arts degree from ArtCenter College of Design, Pasadena, California, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong Department of Fine Arts. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. At the 58th Venice Biennale, Tse was the first female artist to represent Hong Kong in a solo exhibition. Her work is featured in many articles, catalogues, and other publications. Tse received the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in 2009 and has been on the faculty at California Institute of the Arts since 2001, where she held the Robert Fitzpatrick Chair in Art from 2018 to 2021. Shirley Tse works in the media of sculpture, installation, photography, and text. She at once deconstructs the world of synthetic objects that carry paradoxical meanings and constructs models in which differences might come together. To visualize heterogeneity, Tse conflates different scales, fuses the organic with the industrial, moves between the literal and the metaphorical, merges narratives, and collapses the subject and object relationship.

The International Sculpture Center (ISC) established the Outstanding Educator Award program to honor inspiring, influential artists who have taught sculpture at institutions of higher learning for 15+ years and have sustained exemplary careers as professional artists. originally met in their shared junior high school in Iowa. The Duncans purchased
their first artist work, an Impressionist painting, in the 1970s. They have
since dedicated their lives to collecting and supporting artistic works. They
have amassed an extensive private art collection at their home in Lincoln,
Nebraska. The Duncans renovated Clarinda’s Carnegie Library, in Southwest Iowa,
to transform it into a museum for the community. They have also flown their
private jet around the world for the sole purpose of discovering new and

His work invites viewers to recognize the beauty in what is usually deemed ugly. His sculptures made of thorns create unique atmospheres in dozens of homes, offices and public buildings and they have often been selected for prestigious art exhibitions in Curaçao, the Caribbean, South America, United States and Europe. The Cathedral of Thorns is a building-sized illuminated labyrinth. Visitors are invited to walk through its corridors and experience an artistic journey through a troublesome history toward a bright future; both sides represented by the hostile yet beautiful thorns. The walls have niches that hold objects of contemporary art by guest artists, expressing mankind’s ability to change, share and collaborate through creativity.

The ISC Innovator Award was established to recognize the creative innovation of individuals, organizations, or collectives who develop new ideas and work to improve and/or expand the field of contemporary sculpture. The unanimous vote for the selection of Coral Lambert as the award recipient from this year’s pool of applicants is a testament to the dedication and excellence demonstrated by this educator.

Coral will be the subject of a feature article in the January/February 2023 issue of International Sculpture Center’s award winning publication Sculpture magazine, as well as featured on the ISC website.

Coral achieved her B.F.A at Canterbury School of Art and M.F.A at Manchester Metropolitan University. After teaching in England for a few years she received an International Research Fellowship at the University of Minnesota. Coral Co-Founded New Orleans Sculpture Lab and Co-chaired the 5th International Conference on Contemporary Cast Iron Art. In 2000 she was recognized as a cultural asset by the US government and granted the O1 Visa as an Artist of Extraordinary Ability. Showing her work internationally, Coral has received numerous awards, grants and honors throughout her career. Spanning three decades, Coral’s approach to making sculpture is extensive in her response to site, process and material. She combines her background as a formal steel sculptor with her passion for iron casting. Her work explores forces of nature and seeks to address darker issues related to earth’s resources.

The International Sculpture Center (ISC) established the “Outstanding Educator Award” program in 1996 to recognize individual artist-educators who have excelled at teaching sculpture in Institutions of higher learning. An exemplary career combining personal studio practice and measurable academic contribution form the evaluative basis of this award. established the annual "Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary
Sculpture Award" program in 1994 to recognize young sculptors and to
encourage their continued commitment to the field. It was also designed to draw
attention to the sculpture programs of the participating universities, colleges
and art schools. The award program's growing publicity resulted in an
exceptional number of participating institutions; including 100 universities,
colleges and art school sculpture programs for a nominated total of 234
students.
<p style="font-variant-ligatures: normal;font-variant-caps: normal;orphans: 2;

ISC Announces 2020 Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award Recipients

Twelve students have been awarded the prestigious International Sculpture Center's Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award for 2020.

The International Sculpture Center (ISC) established the annual "Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award" program in 1994 to recognize young sculptors and to encourage their continued commitment to the field. It was also designed
to draw attention to the sculpture programs of the participating universities, colleges and art schools. The award program's growing publicity resulted in an exceptional number of participating institutions; including over 100 universities, colleges
and art school sculpture programs from five countries for a nominated total of 218 students.

A distinguished panel made up of María Carolina Baulo, art historian, curator and arts writer-critic (Buenos Aires, Argentina); Angel Cabrales,
artist and educator (El Paso, TX) and Peyton Scott Russell artist and arts instructor (Minneapolis, MN) deliberated over 570 images of sculptural works to select 12 award recipients and 10
honorable mentions. The selection of the recipients from a large pool of applicants, including international students, is a great accomplishment and testament to the artistic promise of the students' work.

The 12 award recipients will participate in an Artsy online exclusive exhibition from October 1 to December 31, 2020. A virtual reception will be held in conjunction with the exhibit in November 2020. The artists' work will be featured in the January/February
2021 issue of the International Sculpture Center's award winning publication, Sculpture magazine as well as on the ISC’s newly launch website at www.sculpture.org.

Coleen Sterritt, professor in the Sculpture Program at Long Beach City College, California, has been awarded the prestigious International Sculpture Center’s Outstanding Educator Award for 2019. Coleen Sterritt’s fabricated hybrid sculptures evoke the interplay between nature, culture, and lived experience. Questioning the diverse possibilities of sculpture in both scale and form, her eccentric, abstract structures present strong polarities possessing a resonance at once familiar and obscure.

It was also designed to draw attention to the sculpture programs of the participating universities, colleges and art schools. The award program's growing publicity resulted in an exceptional number of participating institutions; including 137 universities, colleges and art school sculpture programs from five countries for a nominated total of 354 students.

Malcolm Cochran Receives International Sculpture Center's 2017 Outstanding Educator Award

Malcolm Cochran, Professor of Art at The Ohio State University, Columbus, has been awarded the prestigious International Sculpture Center's Outstanding Educator Award for 2017. Malcolm Cochran has created large-scale sculptures, installations, and site-specific public art since the late 1970s. His projects often develop in response to a particular place or location; other works are more introspective and originate in personal circumstances and events. Cochran has no primary medium or signature form, but strong threads run through his work: the importance of place and a strongly implied human presence are central to many of the pieces, and the works often imply narrative possibilities. His work is archived at malcolmcochran.com.

The 2017 program resulted in an exceptional number of faculty nominations from thirty-two (32) institutions of higher learning from five (5) countries. The unanimous vote for the selection of Malcolm Cochran as the award recipient from this large pool of applicants is a testament to the dedication and excellence demonstrated by this educator.

Mary Bates Neubauer, Professor of Art at Arizona State University, has been awarded the prestigious International Sculpture Center's Outstanding Educator Award for 2015. Mary Bates Neubauer received a B.F.A. in Sculpture from Colorado State University in 1973 and an M.F.A. in Sculpture from Indiana University Bloomington in 1981. Her sculpture, prototypes, and digital prints focus on the hidden aspects of our surroundings, emphasizing a visual/tactile way of understanding global and metropolitan functions.

The International Sculpture Center (ISC) established the "Outstanding Educator Award" program in 1996 to recognize individual artist-educators who have excelled at teaching sculpture in institutions of higher learning. An exemplary career combining personal studio practice and measurable academic performance form the evaluative basis of this award.

Successful candidates for this award are masters of sculptural history, theory, processes and techniques, who have devoted a major part of their careers to the education of the next generation and to the advancement of the sculpture field as a whole. Past winners include: Aristotle Georgiades, of the University of Wisconsin Madison, WI; Wayne Potratz, of the University of Minnesota, MN; Winifred Lutz, of Tyler School of Art, PA; Ron Pederson, of Aquinas College, MN; Edward Mayer, of the University at Albany, NY; Patricia Renick, of the University of Cincinnati, OH; Joseph Seipel, of Virginia Commonwealth University, VA; Morio Shinoda, of the University of Tsukuba, Japan; Julius Schmidt, of The University of Iowa, IA; and George Beasley, of Georgia State University, GA.

The 2015 program resulted in an exceptional number of faculty nominations from twenty-four (24) institutions of higher learning from four (4) countries. The unanimous vote for the selection of Mary Bates Neubauer as the award recipient from this large pool of applicants is a testament to the dedication and excellence demonstrated by this educator.
